For the past 4 years PCSOs from The Neighbourhood Policing team in Bridgend have been working with The Zone in the Town Centre and Tesco Brewery Lane to provide community meals around key dates for members of the local community who, live on their own and want to get out and meet new people or just for some support and a friendly chat. The meals are provided twice a year at Easter and Christmas time and cooked by the Local PCSOs.
A food share scheme is also run at the Zone, food is donated by Tesco and is available for people in the local community who can drop into the Zone on a Wednesday morning and take a pick of groceries on offer.
The Zone is located at Dunraven Place, Bridgend town centre, and is used as a community building which holds a variety of community and social events. The Zone was set up to help all members of the community and offers assistance in the following; parenting, money management, nutrition, healthy eating, health and wellbeing. Help is also on hand to develop your CV and assist in job searching, free training courses, Internet access and information about other agencies and youth services.
Sgt Angela Bennett said “The community meal initiative is growing in size with every event, and has had a positive impact in the Community. Tesco`s generosity towards the local community has been outstanding and we would not be able to keep the event running without their support. As the Bridgend initiative has been so successful and has received positive feedback we are planning to contact other Stores in the area with the view of spreading this initiative to other communities”.
